How to Use A Condom (Part 2)
The following information is taken from: "A Prospective Study Of Condom Use In Family Planning Clients" by Dr Margaret J. Sparrow and Kay Lavill (December 1993)

  • Carefully unwrap the condom. Do this before you start making love to avoid interruptions. Most condoms are now foil wrapped. Struggling with the wrapping can damage a condom.

  • Avoid puncturing the rubber with sharp objects such as fingernails, jewellery or teeth. If you are putting on the condom with the mouth use the lips, not teeth.

  • Don't let condoms interfere with the pleasure of sex. Make the putting on of the condom an enjoyable part of foreplay. Partners can share this activity. Once you have mastered the use of a condom try different ways of putting it on (safely).

  • If you are not circumcised, pull your foreskin back.

  • Place the condom on the head of the erect penis. Pinch the tip of the condom with finger and thumb to squeeze air out of the tip. All the main brands of condoms sold in New Zealand have a reservoir tip to collect the sperm.

  • If you are using a condom with a plain end and no reservoir, you should leave a small empty space at the tip to catch semen.

  • Make sure the condom is placed the right way up to unroll, then roll the rim all the way to the base of the penis, continuing to squeeze the tip while unrolling. Different brands are packaged in their own distinctive way and it is not always easy to tell which is the right way up. Some brands leave more of the condom unrolled than others. If there is a long unrolled part, make sure it does not get caught under the rim. It is easy to make mistakes if you are flustered or in the dark.

  • If you do put it on the wrong way, open a new one and start again. Sperm, or infections present in the fluid at the tip of the penis, may have landed on the outside of the condom.

  • Sufficient lubrication is needed so that sex is comfortable. This way there is no undue strain on the condom. Dryness can cause breaks. For women, the best way to provide natural lubrication is to make sure that adequate time is spent on foreplay.

  • Nearly all condoms sold in Singapore are lubricated. The lubricant may be plain or spermicidal. Nevertheless, dryness may still be a problem. Additional lubricant can be applied to the outside of the condom, around the outside of the vagina/anus or inserted right into the vagina.
