How to Use A Condom (Part 1)
The following information is taken from: "A Prospective Study Of Condom Use In Family Planning Clients" by Dr Margaret J. Sparrow and Kay Lavill (December 1993)

  • Don't rely on someone else to provide protection. You are responsible for your own health.

  • If you are in a situation where you should be using a condom, make it a golden rule: NO CONDOM, NO SEX. That means no penetrative sex. There are many other safe and pleasureable things that you can do together besides sexual intercourse.

  • Take extra care if alcohol or drugs are available. Know what is a safe amount for you. These can affect your ability to practice safer sex.

  • Use a condom every single time you have intercourse. There is no "safe" time with regard to transmitting disease and many unplanned pregnancies occur because condoms are not used every time.

  • Only use condoms which conform to the approved ISO 4047 standard. Novelty condoms are for fun only and should not be used for intercourse.

  • Check the expiry date on the packet to make sure the condom is not too old. Latex rubber deteriorates with age.

  • Do not use a condom, regardless of the expiry date, if the package is broken or if the condom shows any obvious defect such as brittleness, stickiness, discolouration or if it does not unroll correctly.

  • If the condom is in good condition there is no need to test it before puttiing it on. Do not fill it with air or water to check for holes. Condoms are tested in the factory and streaching may damage the rubber.

  • Put the condom on as soon as the penis is erect. To prevent infection, do not have unprotected sexual contact with any orifice- vagina, mouth or rectum. If changing from one orifice to another, put on a new condom.

  • Take care with the fluid which appears at the tip of the penis when a man is aroused (pre-cum). Infections can be transferred through this fluid and it may contain sperm.
